Memories

Post: Revisit the goals you set in Week 2. Did you reach them?

so to be perfectly honest my goal is to just really get through the 11 weeks with not to much trouble fuss and drama and go in the running for that ipod!!! but to serious i would really just like to be up-to-date with all the technology that is available to me.

...so that was little old me at the start of this whole thing. im pretty sure i reached my goal as i have finished the 11 weeks, and early mind you as i will overseas at the time of completion of this project. i do feel i am as up-to-date with technology as i would like to be. ill be more than happy to just stumble across the rest as i see a need for me to use them.

Post: What have been the highs and lows of the 23 Things for you? Where to next with emerging technologies? For you? For libraries?

having an IT boyfriend means i will always be surrounded by technology be it emerging or not so i will always understand the lingo students begin to use and if i don't i have a constant source to which i can turn to to find out more. but im now more happy to stumble across them rather than having to go hunt for them. the high would have to be facebook. to get the opportunity to join facebook for work but then get to use it to regain contact with so many that i have lost along the way has been great, and i know i will continue to use facebook long after this project is completed. Myspace who?? the low was probably time and guilt. i could always find time to do the things each week but i always felt guilty every time i signed on to do them. i only work 2.5 days a week in my two sections and to take an hour out of one or the other never seemed fair as the other would then get me for a longer period say. but i think i am over that now, mainly as i have finished. libraries will always have to emerge with technology, its just the business we are in. if we are not up-to-date how are we expected to really serve our clientèle the best they deserve.

neways im off on holidays now. see you all upon my return.

adios

Facebook

i honestly love facebook. i had a (well still do) Myspace page but since joining facebook my Myspace page as gone dead. everyone is now using facebook. the people i have been able to regain contact with and keep in contact with is amazing. the range of things one can do on Facebook is cool.

libraries itself could have a presence on facebook if they do it right. have a page directly for Murdoch with one administrator and then add updates to the profile. that way anyone who befriends Murdoch or has friends that are friends with Murdoch will get the updates and see whats going on in the world of Murdoch, through the avenue which is all the rage right now.

below is a little clip that was posted on my boyfriends facebook page which i thought was quiet relevant to all those just joining a social network for the first time.

thing 23 = thing 33. Confused??

Thing 33: Express Yourself Through Online Art

im not an arty person myself but some how this title drew me to it (no pun intended). i had a play with "make a snow flake" and that was interesting the way it can take all the flakes i added and then make then move either 2d or 3d. impressive but not that much fun. "Mr Picasso Head" was a whole lot more fun. u get o chose everything to do with the head. one could spend hours on the different creations one could make. mine is only simple but the link has been added to my favourites so i can come bak to it one day and have an intense play with it. have a look below and see for your selves.

A Mr. Picassohead painting has been created for you to view online. Please visit the link below to see your painting, cruise the Mr. Picassohead Gallery, or to make your very own Mr. Picassohead.

Thing 22 - Death by Powerpoint

well thing 22 is all about embedding a slideshare we found interesting. and with it filled with library and web 2.0 stuff i thought boring, we all know about this. we have been doing it the past few months. so then when i saw the slide for Dragon Ball Z i thought perfect. its fun and interesting with heaps of colours but then thought to myself, what does Dragon Ball Z really have to do with libraries and emerging technology. so i went though the site again. and found what i thought to be helpful, relevant, interesting and a little fun. with all the Microsoft training that is beginning to be run and with power point just finished, i thought why not share this one with you all. i hope you enjoy "Death By Power Point"

mmm del.icio.us

heres my thoughts on comparing social bookmarking sites:

citeulike: not one i like.
i found it not an easy site to search as it did not list the relevant sites according to relevance which meant i was to thrall through all links and pages before i could find one/if any relevant pages for my search. this then in my books makes it a time waster

connotea: either broken or just really crap
not happy bout this site at all hey. was all in like this weird code and there were no titles therefore making the user have any idea what anything was. upon some exploring it turns out it was just a posting of a link. CRAP!!!!

Google: always my 1# choice
"Google orders by relevance - by number of sites linking to it. whereas social bookmarking site order by the number of users linking to it" Gwyn Campbell, 2007
therefore comparing it with a social bookmarking site in my books doesn't work as they are just not the same thing. its like comparing apples with oranges. found this the same as the library's catalogue. didn't understand why that was included as a compare.

dogpile: cool name!
although it has a cool name i didn't really like this site. it doesn't distinguish what is a sponsored site to what is not, and in my experience sponsored sites aren't that helpful. so therefore i would not be recommending this social bookmarking site to anyone. if it cant help the user by displaying its results in an organised way its no way useful.

zuula: weird name!
good for those who try to live outside the square but for those who are either just used to engines like Google and yahoo, or are not to computer savvy id say it would be a little too confusing. i know thats how i found it.

kart00:
all though its a visual delight i found it weird with all its results linking like a brainstorm and being what appeared to me all over the place. i found the lack of summary or explanation on how to use the darn site to be quite annoying and would defiantly never use this one again.

del.icio.us: yum yum
its very concise on the results it gives you but the page is quite plain and boring. i liked the feature where it shows how popular each result is which is always a plus when people are looking for information. if more users are linking to it then you get the feeling the information is highly relevant. one social bookmarking site i may have to remember for the future.

i can see where sites like these may have there advantages but i will be sticking to Google and yahoo.

Thing 9

http://vaderzim.pbwiki.com/Singapore%202007

Wiki's in the workplace and especially ours might be useful to share recipes. i know recipes are stored on the G Drive but if your at home without access to this drive and you know there is a recipe here that you are dying to try for your dinner party the following night, having it on a public wiki would be useful.

students might be able to use then to put up notes for lecturers and tutorials so that students that are sick will have access to them from home so they don't have to a) get behind and b) bug other students for their notes.

as it being a public avenue there is the need to be wary of what one puts on one of these things so its probably only useful for non private material and information

ALIA

for u out there. next week i will be away so check out my progress at this site/blog

http://aliaconference2007.blogspot.com/

Confused

so im a little confused right. this 23 things program runs for 13 weeks and we are meant to make something like 12 blog posts (one for each week we do a thing) but if week four and five are play weeks, what is the topic we are supposed to write about?

someone throw me a freakin bone here (little Austin Powers for u all)

so if we do have a play are we meant to comment on this and if we do nothing are we meant to just ramble some crap, coz this i am good at.

so im gonna make this my official week 4 blog

In what cases do you think RSS will be useful? For you? For our users? What makes it different to email ?.

if used correctly it is a useful tool to keep always up to date with the information that you are interested in without having to remember to check the actual site time to time.

at work its is also a good way to keep up with the changing nature in which we work and for students to keep up with the changes we make here to things that effect how they study.

i dont really have much i wanna say about this topic. so i might just stop here.

Where my name comes from

so here is a little background to where my blog page title actually comes from.

there is this show which is on nickelodeon (well not at the moment its not) and it is called Invader Zim. it is about an irken alien that is banished from his home planet and sent on a "secret mission" to invader. the all mighty tallest send him to the furthest planet from irken, which turns out to be earth. so Zim is on earth thinking he is here to invade our planet. our only hope is a big headed boy named Dib who is obsessed with aliens.

the series runs for about 22 episodes and just goes through the adventures or should i say misadventures.

so why do i call myself vader zim when the show is invader zim i hear u ask?? well it actually has to do with my car believe it or not. i drive a 2004 Holden Commodore which is a VZ model. so coz my car is a VZ and Invader Zim is my favourite tv series i name myself Vader Zim as eventually i will get number plates (white on pink for those thinking of buying me a present) so it kinda matches (VZ - Vader Zim).

so the character u will see in this clip is Gir. he is Zim's trusty side kick robot which is actually meant to me a Sir. but coz Zim is not a popular invader the tallests just threw odd parts together to create Gir. he is the most stupidest but cutest little robot around. i love him so much i had him tattooed on my ankle :) the song that this clip is to is called Numa Numa and for the life of me i haven't been able to work out what language it is in. but it such a cool song no matter what that its been my mobile ring tone for the past 2 yrs.

well enough of me blabbing heres the clip. Enjoy!

star wars vs monty python

i know Kathryn sent this round but as a huge Star Wars and Monty Python fan i found this hilarious

interesting

an interesting fact for all those young at heart

i heard on the radio the other day that there is a new club opening up on Lake St in Northbridge and of all things to call it, its gonna be known as 'The Library'

i think we should so go check this place out and actually see what type of crowd a nightclub of this name may draw. and while we are there have a drink or 10!

u know, the nitty gritty

so to be perfectly honest my goal is to just really get through the 11 weeks with not to much trouble fuss and drama and go in the running for that ipod!!! but to serious i would really just like to be up-to-date with all the technology that is available to me.

the only obstacle i will probably is over coming the idea of seeing problems as challenges. i have a habit of blowing things way out or proportion and panicking every time. so this maybe a good experience for me. but if i start to go bald, HELP!!!!!

i think the main thing ill need in my toolkit is friends. Murdoch friends and my outside friends. Ive already taken the opportunity of joining Facebook for the 23 things program and done it early so i can stay in even closer contact with friends. so friends are what im really going to rely on.
